Our Cows live in a farm in Western Finland. Their servant, Sumangala, has 26 years' experience of working with different production animals.

During those years, there has been a vast structural change happening in agriculture. Stock sizes have kept on growing. Efficiency is the word of the day. Good changes have also come about: The knowledge about feeding animals and the awareness of breed-specific behaviors has increased a lot.

Being an agricultural entrepreneur is a demanding job. The work requires a great deal of responsibility and commitment, and can sometimes be hard and stressful. Agricultural politics determinine how one must act. Profitability of the work is not easily reached, and so there are no other choices than increasing the efficiency of the process. This is why calves get separated from the mothers immediately after birth, bull calves are slaughtered straight away, and finally, a dairy cow, who has already given everything gets slaughtered when the amount of milk produced starts to decrease. There are not much options if one wants to make it profitable.

When I became a mother I started already to think about this topic of separating a calf from its mother - can it be right? When killing infant bull calves became a norm in Europe, I started to feel that now is the time to act - to give my little contribution for the good of the cows. In many countries, there are already happy cow farms. As far as I know, our farm is however the only one of its kind in Finland.

With my project, I wish to wake up the consumers a little bit. If you use animal products, do demand a respectful treatment of the animals and be also prepared to pay for it. Otherwise, there will be no change happening.

At the moment, there is a small group of us who are working for this project in Finland. I wish to offer citizens a chance to participate in the life of the cows either as an owner or a godparent. A big thank you to all of you who have enabled the life of our cows.

The milk produced I make into cheese, yoghurt or clarified butter, ghee. Raw milk is not sold because the products must be pasteurized. For the time being, all our produce is usually reserved and sold right away.
